The government would have you believe that they are not responsible for the current oil crisis. Bullshit!
Here are five contributors:
1) Limits are placed on where oil exploration can take place. Most of the Florida coast is off limits (Cuba is drilling out there, but that oil goes to China).
2) Limits are placed on whether refineries can be built/expanded. It is the “not in my back yard” mentality. And forget about nuclear plants…
3) The government is more than happy to collect their percentage on every gallon sold. A percentage of a bigger number is a bigger number. Any discussion of a tax holiday is quickly squashed. If you wanted to know what you pay in taxes, check this report out. The worst part of gas taxes is the repressive nature of them. The poorest are affected more as a percentage of income.
4) The government wants to shift the focus on the large oil companies. Yes, these companies have been very profitable in the past couple of years. But these are the same companies that we want investing billions, if not trillions in finding and producing the oil we’ll need in the future. Why punish them and take those investment dollars away?
5) The government won’t move to limit speculation on the price of oil. When an “expert” says that oil could go to $150 - $200 a barrel, speculators are emboldened. These speculators are not going to take delivery. They are merely pushing up the price for their own profit. A commodity that is this important shouldn’t be subject to such manipulation.
This all comes about because our government has not passed an Energy Policy. Congress will spend time investigating the New England Patriots, but can’t seem to manage an Energy Policy. That is really bullshit! Get a grip! The companies that fulfill our energy need are not the enemy.
High oil prices are bullshit. And our government is all smoke and mirrors on this issue. Bullshit!
